Chapter 28

"Hey there… whatca doing?" I asked from behind the desk of my ready room, my voice echoing slightly against the cold, metal bulkheads.

"I'm working."

I watched Sonya, cloistered within her dark Symbio Deck workspace. Multiple halos projected in front of her—reflected QuansCode characters danced across her face, illuminating her determined features. Despite her dual slings, she was manipulating the console like a champ. Her eyes darted across the information like a predator locking onto its prey, intensity coiling like a spring within her.

"How about you come to the bridge? Hang out here for a while."

"Pass."

"Naw… I think you should come to the bridge."

"Pass and double pass."

I pursed my lips. Damn, this kid could be obstinate. "I need your help with something," I lied. I wondered if she could feel it too… the danger lurking just beyond these bulkheads.

Her eyes flicked up, meeting mine for a fleeting second before refocusing on her display. "I don't want to. And you're starting to bug me."

"As the ship's captain, I'm ordering you to come to the bridge."

That produced a flicker of amusement, a slight twitch of a smile that lit up her expression.

"Since this is no longer a ship, and I'm not one of your U.S. Space Navy lemmings. I will, for the third time… pass."
